Q: How do I add a new device?

If you have a device other than the ones already configured follow these steps in order to configure iTunes Agent to recognize your device: Right-click on the iTunes Agent icon in the system tray and choose "Preferences...". Click the "New" button to enable the fields for entering configuration for the new device.

Fill in the information as shown in the figures below:

The music folder is the folder on your device in which the music is stored. If the music is stored in the root of your device (i.e. F:\) then leave this field blank. If the music is stored in F:\Music then enter "Music" here. This path is always relative to the root of your device.

Please note: The music folder should point to the folder on your media player into which iTunes Agent will copy your music, not the folder on your computer containing all your music - iTunes Agent will find the latter on it's own.

The recognize by folder/file field tells iTunes Agent how to recognize your device. This field is very important. When iTunes Agent checks devices it looks for folders or files matching the name entered here, so it should be something unique for your device. You can use the "Create" button to choose your device and iTunes Agent will generate a unique file for your device. It's highly recommended that you use this feature for creating a unique file for your device.

Choose in what way iTunes Agent should organize the tracks on your device. The available patterns are (using A-ha - Take On Me as example):
  • iTunes:
    A-ha\Headlines and Deadlines\01 Take on Me.mp3

If compilation flag is set: Compilations\Headlines and Deadlines\01 Take on Me.mp3

  • Artist Folder:
    A-ha - Headlines and Deadlines\01 Take on Me.mp3

If compilation flag is set: Headlines and Deadlines\01 Take on Me.mp3

  • Flat:
    A-ha - Take on Me.mp3

The associate with playlist setting lets you specify a playlist to associate your device with. "Use device name..." will create a playlist with the same name as your device, but if you want a more exotic playlist for your device you may choose such playlists as "Party shuffle" or any other Smart Playlist.

Q: I get an error message when I start iTunes Agent! What is wrong?

Most likely you do not have the correct .Net Framework version installed. iTunes Agent require that version 2.0 Final, or later is installed on your computer. Please make sure your .Net runtime is up to date via Windows Update.

Q: I get an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." error when I try to synchronize my device(s). What may be wrong?

If you get an error message saying something like "Error occured while checking for deleted tracks: Failed to translate track information according to the defined pattern for this device (Object reference not set to an instance of an object.)." when you synchronize your device you are most likely running an old version of iTunes Agent. Please see the download page for instructions.

The reason for this error is most likely that there is a track in your playlist which do not exist on your local computer. The latest version of iTunes Agent will tell you which track this is when you attempt to synchronize. To fix this error without upgrading, please go through your playlist and check for any tracks with a small exclamation mark next to them and remove these tracks.

Q: What devices are supported?

Most mass storage devices should be supported. The only criteria for iTunes Agent to be able to synchronize your device is that it is mapped to a drive letter under "My Computer" in Windows.
